Lost the Amazon Buy Box? AI Prompts to Find Out Why and Win It Back

By David Brooks12 min read15 prompts

Sales on an ASIN drop by half overnight, the listing looks fine, and the ads are still running. Check the Buy Box first. When your offer is not the featured one, most shoppers never see it.

Amazon does not tell you why you lost it. The cause can be your price, a competitor's price, a price found outside Amazon, your stock, your delivery promise, your account metrics, or a new seller on your listing. These prompts work through those causes in order with the reports you already have, then help you win the Buy Box back without pricing away your margin.

Run them in ChatGPT or Claude in one conversation, replace the square-bracket placeholders, and paste reports as CSV text or upload the files. Anything that changes a price or reports another seller is your call: review the output before you act.

How Amazon Decides the Buy Box

Amazon calls the Buy Box the Featured Offer. When several sellers offer the same product, Amazon picks the offer it features on the detail page, and the selection can rotate between eligible offers. Amazon does not publish the weighting or thresholds, but you can check each kind of factor yourself.

FactorWhat it meansWhere to check it
EligibilityYour offer has to be eligible to compete at all; a Professional selling plan and good performance are requiredManage All Inventory, Featured Offer eligibility column (add it under Preferences)
PriceThe total price the shopper pays, including shipping, against other offers and against prices outside AmazonPricing Health, the offer listing page
DeliveryHow fast and how reliably the product arrives; FBA and Prime offers usually show faster deliveryThe delivery dates shown on each offer
Seller performanceOrder defects, cancellations, late shipments and trackingAccount Health
AvailabilityWhether you have stock to sell right nowFBA Inventory, Restock Inventory

Two things surprise sellers. Amazon can feature no offer at all and show a See All Buying Options button instead, often when every offer is priced above what Amazon considers competitive. And a sole seller can still lose the Buy Box, to that price check or to a stockout.

Amazon's Featured Offer help page in Seller Central explains the current rules. Trust it over thresholds quoted in forums.

Gather the Reports Before You Prompt

Pull these for the ASINs that lost sales, for the weeks before and after the drop:

  • Business Reports, Detail Page Sales and Traffic by Child Item: Sessions - Total, Page Views - Total, Featured Offer (Buy Box) Percentage, Units Ordered, Unit Session Percentage, Ordered Product Sales. Download it by week so you can see when the percentage moved.
  • Manage All Inventory: your price, shipping, fulfillment channel, available quantity and Featured Offer eligibility for each SKU.
  • Pricing Health: any offer Amazon flags as not featured because of price, with the reference price it shows.
  • Account Health: Order Defect Rate, cancellation rate, late shipment rate and valid tracking rate.
  • The offer listing page: every seller on the ASIN with price, shipping, delivery date, fulfillment method and seller rating. Copy it as text.

Tip: Exporting five reports for every ASIN, every week, is the slow part. If you would rather ask the question directly, DataDoe connects Seller Central to Claude or ChatGPT through MCP and refreshes Featured Offer percentage, prices, offers and inventory daily, and it includes a ready-made Buy Box loss root cause skill that runs these checks for you. The prompts below work the same either way.

Prompt 1 · Gather the Reports Before You PromptChatGPT Claude
Act as an Amazon marketplace analyst. Here is my Detail Page Sales and Traffic by Child Item report by week for the last [8-12] weeks: [paste report with week, Child ASIN, Sessions - Total, Featured Offer (Buy Box) Percentage, Units Ordered, Unit Session Percentage, Ordered Product Sales]. For each ASIN, find the week the percentage dropped by more than [10] points and estimate units lost if conversion had held at the earlier rate. Rank ASINs by estimated lost sales. Output a table: ASIN, week of drop, percentage before and after, sessions, estimated lost units and sales. Mark estimates clearly as estimates.

Why: Ranking by lost sales tells you what to fix first. A drop to 60 percent on a top seller can matter more than a drop to zero on a slow one.

Find Out Why You Lost the Buy Box

Work through the causes in this order. Fixing price before eligibility wastes margin.

Is your offer eligible?

Prompt 2 · Is your offer eligible?ChatGPT Claude
Act as an Amazon account health specialist. Here is my Manage All Inventory export with the Featured Offer eligibility column: [paste SKU, ASIN, price, fulfillment channel, available quantity, Featured Offer eligibility]. Here are my Account Health metrics with the last 60 days: [paste Order Defect Rate, cancellation rate, late shipment rate, valid tracking rate, and any policy warnings]. List every SKU that is not eligible. For each, give the most likely cause based on this data only, what I can check to confirm it, and the fix. If the data does not show a cause, say that and tell me what to look at next instead of guessing.

Is your price the problem?

Prompt 3 · Is your price the problem?ChatGPT Claude
Act as an Amazon pricing analyst. Here is the Pricing Health data for my ASINs: [paste ASIN, my price, shipping, the reference price Amazon shows, and the reason flagged]. Here is my landed cost per unit including product, freight, FBA fees and referral fee: [paste per ASIN]. For each flagged ASIN, calculate my margin if I match the reference price. Sort into match now, match temporarily, and do not match, with a one-line reason each.

Tip: If the reference price comes from outside Amazon, check whether the outside offer is real, current and comparable (same pack size, same condition) before you cut your own price to meet it.

Who are you competing with?

Prompt 4 · Who are you competing with?ChatGPT Claude
Act as an Amazon competitive offers analyst. Here is the offer listing for [ASIN], copied from the page: [paste each offer with seller name, price, shipping, delivery date, fulfillment method, seller rating and rating count]. My offer: [paste my price, shipping, delivery date, fulfillment method, rating]. Compare my offer with each one on total price, delivery speed and seller performance. Tell me which offer is most likely featured and why, the single change that would make mine most competitive, and whether it is worth it at my margin of [X] per unit. Amazon does not publish its weighting, so give reasoning, not certainty.
Prompt 5 · Who are you competing with?ChatGPT Claude
Here are dated snapshots of the offer listing for [ASIN]: [paste each snapshot with date], and my Featured Offer (Buy Box) Percentage on those dates: [paste]. List what changed between snapshots (new sellers, price moves, delivery changes, stockouts), match each change to a move in my percentage, and name the most likely cause of the drop.

Is it stock or delivery?

Prompt 6 · Is it stock or delivery?ChatGPT Claude
Act as an FBA inventory planner. Here is my FBA inventory data for [ASIN]: [paste daily or weekly available, inbound, reserved quantities]. Here is my Featured Offer (Buy Box) Percentage for the same days: [paste]. Did the losses line up with low or zero available stock, stranded or reserved units, or inbound not yet received? Give the dates, what happened, and the days of cover I need so it does not repeat, at [X] units a day and a [Y]-day lead time.

Restocking rules are their own topic; our inventory and logistics prompts go deeper on reorder points and lead times.

Prompt 7 · Is it stock or delivery?ChatGPT Claude
Act as an Amazon operations consultant. I fulfill [ASIN] myself (FBM). Handling time: [X] days. Shipping templates: [describe]. The competing offer shows delivery on [date], mine on [date]. Suggest changes to handling time, templates or carriers that close the gap, with the risk each adds to my late shipment rate. Never suggest a date I cannot meet.

When Another Seller Is on Your Listing

If you own the brand and a new seller appears on your listing, the response depends on who they are: an authorized reseller, someone selling genuine product bought elsewhere, or someone selling counterfeits or a different product on your page. Only the last two are policy violations.

Prompt 8 · When Another Seller Is on Your ListingChatGPT Claude
Act as a brand protection specialist for Amazon. A new seller appeared on my listing [ASIN]. What I know: [seller name, storefront details, price, fulfillment method, when they appeared, seller rating]. My distribution: [who I sell to, whether I have authorized resellers, MAP policy if any]. Work out which situation this most likely is: authorized reseller, unauthorized seller of genuine product, possible counterfeit, or a listing violation such as a different product on my page. For each, explain what evidence would confirm it and what the legitimate response is. Be clear that pricing below me is not a violation on its own.
Prompt 9 · When Another Seller Is on Your ListingChatGPT Claude
I placed a test buy from the seller on [ASIN] and received this: [describe packaging, labels, product, differences from my genuine product, with photos described]. List the factual differences from genuine product, in a form I can use in a Brand Registry Report a Violation submission. Include only what I can show. Do not overstate anything; flag where I need more evidence.

Why: Reports that overstate the evidence get rejected and can damage your credibility with Amazon. A short, factual report with test-buy proof is stronger.

Prompt 10 · When Another Seller Is on Your ListingChatGPT Claude
Act as a channel manager. Unauthorized resellers keep appearing on these listings: [list ASINs and sellers]. My distribution and wholesale terms: [describe]. Suggest changes to agreements, wholesale accounts and packaging that would reduce leakage to Amazon, ranked by effort and impact, and note where a lawyer should review the wording.

Win It Back Without Giving Away Margin

Price is the first lever everyone reaches for and the most expensive one. Set rules before you touch it.

Prompt 11 · Win It Back Without Giving Away MarginChatGPT Claude
Act as an Amazon pricing strategist. For each ASIN here: [paste ASIN, landed cost, FBA fee, referral fee percent, current price, typical competitor price range, Featured Offer (Buy Box) Percentage, units per week]. Calculate a floor price that keeps at least [X] percent net margin, a target price, and a ceiling. Then write repricing rules I can enter in a repricer: when to match, when to stay above the lowest offer because my delivery or rating is better, and when to stop competing. Output a table and the rules in plain language.

Tip: A repricer without a floor is how two sellers race each other to zero. Review every floor against your real costs before you turn rules on.

Prompt 12 · Win It Back Without Giving Away MarginChatGPT Claude
I am considering cutting the price on [ASIN] from [current price] to [new price] to win the Buy Box back. Current Featured Offer (Buy Box) Percentage: [X]. Current weekly units: [Y]. Margin per unit now: [Z]. Estimate how many more units per week I need at the new price to make the same total profit, and tell me whether that is realistic given my sessions of [sessions per week] and conversion rate of [rate]. Show the math.

For pricing beyond the Buy Box, including when to hold price and lose a little share, see the pricing strategy prompts.

Prompt 13 · Win It Back Without Giving Away MarginChatGPT Claude
Act as an Amazon advertising analyst. Here is my Sponsored Products data by advertised ASIN and day for the last [14-30] days: [paste date, advertised ASIN, impressions, clicks, spend, sales, ACOS] and my Featured Offer (Buy Box) Percentage by ASIN and day: [paste]. Show where impressions and sales fell on the days the percentage fell, estimate the ad sales lost, and flag any ASIN where ads kept spending heavily while the percentage was low.

Why: Sponsored Products ads generally serve only while your offer is the featured one, so a Buy Box loss often looks like an ads problem. Raising bids does not fix it; the Buy Box does. Review any bid or budget change before you make it.

Monitor the Buy Box Every Week

Buy Box problems are cheapest to fix early, so check every week.

Prompt 14 · Monitor the Buy Box Every WeekChatGPT Claude
Act as my Amazon operations analyst. Every week I will paste: the Detail Page Sales and Traffic by Child Item report, my FBA available inventory, and my Pricing Health flags. Produce a one-page Buy Box review: ASINs whose percentage fell more than [10] points week over week, ASINs flagged in Pricing Health, ASINs under [X] days of stock, and new sellers on my top [N] listings if I mention them. Give each item a likely cause and one next step. This week's data: [paste].
Prompt 15 · Monitor the Buy Box Every WeekChatGPT Claude
Based on the Buy Box reviews from the last [N] weeks in this conversation, which causes keep coming back, which ASINs are most at risk, and what one process change would prevent the most lost sales next quarter?

FAQ

Why did I lose the Buy Box on Amazon?

The usual causes are a price that is higher than competing offers or than prices Amazon finds elsewhere, low or zero stock, a slower delivery promise, account health problems, or a new seller on your listing. Check eligibility, Pricing Health, stock and the offer listing in that order.

Can you lose the Buy Box if you are the only seller?

Yes. Amazon can decide not to feature any offer, for example when your price is not competitive with prices it finds outside Amazon, and the page then shows See All Buying Options. Pricing Health in Seller Central shows when this is the reason.

Where do I see my Buy Box percentage?

In Business Reports, in the Detail Page Sales and Traffic by Child Item report, in the Featured Offer (Buy Box) Percentage column. Download it by week or day to see when it changed.

Does FBA help you win the Buy Box?

FBA offers usually show fast, Prime-eligible delivery and Amazon handles fulfillment metrics, which helps. It does not guarantee the Buy Box; price, stock and account health still count.

Should I lower my price to get the Buy Box back?

Only after you rule out eligibility, stock and delivery, and only to a floor that keeps your margin. Calculate how many extra units the lower price needs to make the same profit before you change it.
